Marshfield Police Department
K-9 "Dora"
The Marshfield Police Department's K-9 Program began in
May, 2001. The program was completely funded through community donations.
Enough money was raised to purchase and train "Dora", a Belgian Malinois
born in Holland, and her handler. Dora was initially trained in Holland and
then brought to the United States to the Vohne Liche Kennels, which is
located in Denver, Indiana. Dora is four years old.
Dora is a dual purpose patrol /
narcotics dog. She can track suspects or lost persons, protect her
handler, conduct building, area, and small article searches, as well
as make apprehensions and perform narcotics detection. Dora is able
to detect the odors of marijuana, cocaine, heroin,
methamphetamines, as well as their derivatives.
Dora has had an immediate impact for the
Marshfield Police Department. On her first day of work she tracked
two juveniles who had burglarized a home and then fled on foot.
Dora tracked the suspects to a wooded area, where one of the
suspects got up and ran. Dora led the officers to a garage, at
which time the suspect was taken into custody. The second suspect
was apprehended a short distance away. Since May, 2001, Dora has
been used effectively in more than 50 cases.
Officer Scott Schlei is Dora's handler who
attended five weeks of training with her in Indiana. Dora stays
with Officer Schlei around the clock at his residence. They work a
Schedule that best serves both the citizens of Marshfield and the police department. Officer Schlei carries a
pager and can be contacted should Dora's services be needed when they are
off-duty.
Scott and Dora continue to conduct community
presentations, which have had a positive impact upon the citizens that they
have met. They also train regularly to keep their skills sharp.
