Building Inspector I

The Building Inspector I ensures safe housing and places of employment through the inspection of buildings by checking for code compliance, structural components, and heating/ventilating/air conditioning equipment.  This position requires strong interpersonal skills, a customer service mentality, and problem solving ability serving both internal and external customers.

Primary responsibilities include reviewing plans for new construction and alterations of one and two family homes for building, HVAC, and plumbing code to assure compliance with State and local regulations and approve permit issuance.  The position issues corrective orders for non-code compliant installations and completes follow up inspections to check for compliance.  This position primarily conducts inspections as needed for one and two family HVAC, building, energy, plumbing, and erosion code inspections in the City and assists the with the enforcement of nuisance complaints regarding conditions of properties.  This position works with the Municipal Court and the City Attorney for gaining compliance as needed.  Provides and implements a systematic approach to identifying nuisance properties and abatement of these issues.

Position Requirements:  High school diploma or equivalent is required.  Minimum of three (3) years of experience in building inspection or construction experience is preferred.  Valid Wisconsin Class D driver’s license required.  Certification as a Uniform Dwelling Code Inspector–Construction in the State of Wisconsin (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire) is required.  Additional certification as Uniform Dwelling Code Inspector-HVAC, Uniform Dwelling Code Inspector-Plumbing, and/or Uniform Dwelling Code Inspector-Electrical is preferred.  The successful candidate must have the ability to effectively communicate, delegate, follow-up and the ability to maintain effective communications and relationships with co-workers and the general public.

Pay & Benefits:  Starting pay range is $24.85 - $27.43.  The City offers a full benefits package including health/vision, dental, long term disability, flexible spending accounts,  457 Deferred Compensation Plan, and WRS retirement plan.
