2013 Volunteer of the Year
John Christenson is being recognized as 2013 Marshfield Parks & Recreation Volunteer of the Year for his efforts at the Wildwood Zoo over a number of years.
More recently, John was key in making the new fox exhibit at the zoo a reality. John worked closely with Zookeeper, Steve Burns, to plan, raise the funding, coordinate volunteers and assist in the construction of the exhibit that was officially opened in 2013. Funding for the exhibit was critical and John, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Marshfield, worked with fellow club member Lori Bents to secure funding from the Wisconsin Kiwanis Foundation and the Marshfield Kiwanis Club to help fund construction of the exhibit. The Wildwood Zoological Society also assisted in funding the project, in addition to donated services from area businesses. John has always been a supporter of the zoo, but in 2003 and 2004, John earned the nickname "Cage Man" when he designed and constructed the new raptor exhibits at the zoo. John spent a great deal of hours at the zoo, building the cages and guiding efforts of both city staff and volunteers to complete the new exhibits. John also served on the Zoo Society Board of Directors in 2004, and was a member of the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Committee in 2005. John continues to be a strong supporter of the Wildwood Zoo, sharing ideas for future improvements and volunteering to help transport animals for the zoo.
Congratulations to John, and thank you to the many individuals who volunteer each year for the Marshfield Parks & Recreation Department.
