Over
the past four years, the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Committee has
recognized an individual for their volunteer service to the Parks and
Recreation Department and the community. John
Leick was the first recipient in 2001,
John Scheuer
received the award in 2002, Floyd Hamus was recognized in 2003, and last
year the committee honored Harlan Rose for his efforts to build the skate
park.
The
2005 award goes to Dave Tiffany for his efforts to construct,
maintain, and program the disc golf courses at
Wildwood
Park
and Braem
Park.
Dave began his disc golf volunteer
efforts prior to 1990 when he approached the Parks and Recreation
Department about installing its first disc golf course at Wildwood
Park
near Hefko Swimming Pool. Shortly
thereafter, Dave had received approval from the Parks, Recreation, and
Forestry Committee, arranged for donations and funding, had baskets
constructed and installed, started a league, and held a tournament.
Since that time, Dave has continued commitment to both the sport
and the community. He remains
the key contact person between the Parks and Recreation Department and
disc golf issues. Dave also
continues to organize leagues and tournaments and performs numerous hours
of volunteer service maintaining or improving the Parks and Recreation
Department disc golf courses.
In 2000, Dave worked with the
Parks and Recreation Department to plan a new 18-hole disc golf course at
Braem
Park. He and his fellow disc golf
enthusiasts spent numerous hours of planning and brushing of hole layouts
at
Braem
Park. Today, both courses are in
place and used regularly by a wide variety of age groups.
Dave and his club members continue to provide maintenance for both
courses and work closely with the Parks and Recreation Department staff.
