Tanka is a male bison born on May 21st, 1990 here at Wildwood Zoo.  He lives with four other bison in his herd. Tanka is our oldest and largest bison.  He is friendly and the most laid back of the bison.  He likes to patiently wait for his food, although he is always the first bison to get to the food trough.

Two bison calves were born in early July 2009.  A third calf was born in September. The youngest calf is still at the zoo.  See if you can spot it on your next visit.

The bison can sometimes be spotted from within the core zoo, however to get a closer look we recommend observing the herd from the Large Animal Drive.

American Bison are the heaviest land mammal in North America.  They are 5 to 6 feet long and weight 900-2,200 pounds.  Historically, bison occurred throughout North America.  Today, the only free-roaming herd of bison in the U.S. is the bison herd in Yellowstone National Park (northwestern Wyoming).  Bison like to eat grasses and sedges and typically live 12 to 15 years in the wild. Another common name for the American Bison is buffalo.
